How to Measure for a Kilt

Step 1: Measure Your Waist

Wrap a measuring tape around your natural waist (usually at navel level) where your kilt will sit. Keep the tape snug but not too tight. Stand straight, relax, and don’t hold your breath. It’s best to have someone assist you for accuracy.

Fell Measurement

The fell measurement is the distance from the waistband to the hip level where the pleats are sewn down. This ensures a proper fit around the seat area and helps maintain the shape of the kilt.

Step 2: Measure Your Seat

Measure around the widest part of your hips or seat while wearing trousers. Keep your feet together and empty your pockets. Insert two fingers inside the tape for a comfortable fit. Again, having someone help will ensure an accurate measurement.

Step 3: Measure Kilt Length

Measure from the top of your hip bone (at navel level) down to the middle of your kneecap. Stand straight with your feet slightly apart. Kilts are typically worn to the middle of the kneecap. Having someone assist will help get the correct length.

Step 4: Measure Your Height

Remove your shoes and stand straight on a hard surface against a wall. Measure from your heel to the top of your head. A full height measurement helps confirm the correct kilt length.

Step 5: Choose Sett or Stripe (For Traditional Kilts Only)

  • Sett Pleating: Shows the full tartan design in the pleats.
  • Stripe Pleating: Aligns the vertical stripes of the tartan at the center of each pleat.

The choice is yours! Traditionally, civilian kilts are pleated to the Sett, while military kilts are pleated to the Stripe.
